Carnyx Mouthpiece
The mouthpiece is an essential element in order to obtain an authentic carnyx sound, as it is at the point of contact between the lips and the mouthpiece that the sound originates. Only two carnyx mouthpieces have been found in the world, one in Tintignac, France and one in Sanzeno, Italy. The two mouthpieces are very similar, with almost the same length and diameter.
What is interesting to note about carnyx mouthpieces is that, unlike modern brass mouthpieces, carnyx mouthpieces have no cup. You place your lips directly on a flat surface, in contact with the throat . This results in a final sound spectrum with far fewer mid frequencies than other modern brass instruments. This, in my opinion, is also what makes the carnyx beautiful and unique.
