Nebra bronze sword

In 1999, in Nebra (Germany), illegal excavators discovered the Nebra sky disk, a bronze disk about 32 cm in diameter representing the sky at night. The disk is from 1600 BC. Along with this disk, several bracelets, axes, and two short bronze swords with gold rings and fine decorations were also discovered. This type of sword is quite common in Europe during the Bronze Age.

What strikes us about the Nebra swords is their elegance and the particular attention to detail. The handle alone is made of 18 pieces: a gold ring, 8 rivets, one side of the handle in bronze, and the other in wood or horn. Today, only the bronze side of the handle has survived, but archaeologists have found traces of bone in the handle, which could indicate that the missing side was made of horn, bone, or another organic material such as wood.

The blade and the bronze part of the handle are finely engraved and inlaid with copper or black bronze wire: a copper, gold, and silver alloy producing a black colored “bronze.”

While preserving the elegance of the original shape, I currently offer only a simplified version of the Nebra sword: blade and handle without engraving or inlay, Nordic gold ring (alloy of copper, zinc, aluminum, and tin), handle in two bronze parts.
